Peace Family. I appreciate all of the support you have shown me over the years. Right now I just have a few sample copies of my new book, the official release will be in about 2 weeks, I will keep you posted and in time I hope to show my gratitude to each one of you face to face. Represent is a powerful body of work that is very close to my heart. In this particular book there are photos from, France, Korea, Japan, Italy, Ethiopia, Morocco, and cities throughout America. The concept behind the creation of the book was to show how people represent themselves from various cultural and political groups, street organizations, fraternities and sororities, graff artist, B- Boys, and an host of others. It is tribal on so many levels.. This book will be a limited edition and a serious collectors item. There are 126 color photographs in the book, the majority of the images have never been shown before. Peace and respect to all of you.

Cette vidéo présente l’ambiance de l’ouverture de “Represent”, première rétrospective de Jamel Shabazz présentant son travail de 1980 a 2011.
Après plus de cinq semaines d’accrochage, les œuvres / bande son et scénographie seront présentés à travers le monde.

Reconnu comme l’un des plus grands photographes de sa génération, Jamel Shabazz prend depuis plus de 30 ans des clichés des gens qui l’entourent. Pour la sortie de son nouveau livre « Represent » autour de ses voyages, le new-yorkais Jamel Shabazz a voulu montrer que la photographie reste un langage universel. Il met en avant les similitudes des rues du monde et des êtres humains qui les animent. Ce projet tient spécialement à coeur Jamel Shabazz, c’est pour cela que nous avons décidé de vous proposer la première rétrospective de l’artiste. Trente années de photographie mise à l’honneur au travers d’une exposition où se croiseront musiques, volumes, scénographies originales. Jamel Shabazz nous fera l’honneur de sa présence et d’une conférence de presse autour des photos de ce nouvel opus « Represent ». Un événement national donc avec un vernissage en conséquence aux couleurs de NYC.

Photographer Jamel Shabazz will be discussing his 2001 book, Back in the Days (which chronicles New York in the 1980s) at the Tenement Museum tonight. We chatted with him this week to get the scoop on the tome’s tenth anniversary; here’s what he had to say about the photo above:

I vividly remember speaking to [the four young men] about the importance of staying in school and getting a good education, and would occasionally see them during my travels. The young man to the far left in the photograph would go on to be a highly respected hip-hop artist by the name of AZ, whose lyrics addressed social and political issues.
